2nd International Conference on Archaeology and Heritage in Hawler – Erbil

Syriac and Sureth

Syriac is one of the oldest languages of ancient Mesopotamia. It is a western dialect of Aramaic in which many important early texts have been preserved. It was once spoken across much of the Fertile Crescent and Eastern Arabia. Having first appeared in the early first century AD in Edessa, classical Syriac became a major literary language throughout the Middle East from the 4th to the 8th centuries. Besides, a large number of Greek philosophical writings were translated into Syriac and then Arabic during the era of the Islamic Caliphates. Syriac is mainly divided into Eastern and Western varieties, which involve minor dialectal differences.

Sureth, on the other hand, constitutes the contemporary spoken varieties also known as NENA (North Eastern New Aramaic), namely the new Aramaic dialects which have survived in eastern Turkey, western Iran, northern Iraq, and northeastern Syria.
